Nihiwatu Sumba Travel Guide: Villas, Surf & 2026 Seasons

Nihiwatu Sumba means the NIHI Sumba coast in West Sumba Regency — 27 villas across roughly 567 acres, the famed Occy’s Left surf break, waterfalls and ikat-weaving villages. Fly into Tambolaka (TMC), drive ~60 km (90–120 minutes), and plan around the Green, High and Peak 2026 seasons.

Where is Nihiwatu Sumba, and what sits along this coast?

Nihiwatu is the stretch of south-western coastline in West Sumba Regency, roughly 30 km from Waikabubak, where the NIHI Sumba resort (formerly Nihiwatu Resort) sits. Cited luxury profiles describe 27 villas across about 567 acres of jungle — one profile puts it at 175 hectares of forest, rice terraces and grasslands — fronted by 1.6 miles of headland-protected beach.

The resort opened in 2015 under Chris Burch and James McBride following a reported USD 15 million upgrade, and Travel + Leisure has named it “best hotel in the world” for two consecutive years. Reportage also describes it as the only five-star resort on the island — a claim worth attributing to those writers rather than treating as permanent fact.

Sumba itself is part of East Nusa Tenggara Province, about 11,200 km² with around 700,000 people, known for wild horses, savannah, waterfalls, world-class surf and traditional peaked-roof houses among a predominantly Christian population. The government has announced approval for the island’s first international airport amid growing resort investment. How do you actually get to Nihiwatu?

Tambolaka Airport (code TMC) is the closest airport to Nihiwatu. From Bali, most travellers connect through there; Kupang’s El Tari International Airport is an alternate gateway, with the Kupang–Tambolaka hop taking about 55 minutes.

Route Typical time Notes
Bali (DPS) → Tambolaka (TMC) ~1 hr flight Closest airport to Nihiwatu
Kupang (El Tari) → Tambolaka ~55 min flight Alternate NTT gateway
Tambolaka → Nihiwatu Beach ~60.8 km / 90–120 min drive Raja Yohanes Ngongo Bani Street cited as the faster route

Some travel journals cite a 90-minute drive; using “~60 km / 90–120 minutes by car” is the realistic range. One logistics note for 2026: Nyepi, Bali’s day of silence, falls on 19 March 2026 and can disrupt Bali flight and transfer connections, so build a buffer if you route through Denpasar. See our [Bali-to-Sumba flights](/bali-to-sumba-flights/) and [Tambolaka transfer](/tambolaka-airport-to-nihiwatu-transfer/) pages for current options.

What does a Sumba trip cost, and when should you go?

NIHI’s published rate sheet splits 2026 into three seasons. These are the resort’s dates, not ours, and are subject to change.

Season 2026 dates
Green 12 January–31 March; 1–20 November
High 1 April–30 June; 1 September–31 October; 21–28 December
Peak 1 July–31 August; 29 December 2026–7 January 2027

Historic rate context helps set expectations, but label it clearly: in 2015 a one-bedroom villa ran USD 787 green season, USD 1,089 shoulder and USD 1,331 high season, including meals, non-alcoholic drinks, daily laundry, scheduled excursions, Wi-Fi and government taxes and service — with 3–5 night minimum stays. Those are historic figures, subject to change. The table below shows the concrete planning components we can quote or confirm.

Component Duration / detail Indicative figure (as of 2026, subject to change)
DPS–TMC flight ~1 hour Quoted on request
Tambolaka → Nihiwatu transfer ~60 km, 90–120 min Arranged via concierge
Occy’s Left jet-ski access Per day, break capped at 15 surfers rates ↗++ (~USD 150–175)
One-bedroom villa (2015 reference) 3–5 night minimum USD 787 green / 1,089 shoulder / 1,331 high — historic

The “++” on the jet-ski fee means tax and service are added on top, and the USD conversion shifts with exchange rates.

What is there to do beyond the villas?

Occy’s Left is a left-hand reef break first sought out by surfer Claude Graves in 1988. It lies about 800 feet (245 metres) offshore from the NIHI boathouse, reached by a jet-ski service, and the resort limits surfers to 15 at any one time for a crowd-free wave. Our [Occy’s Left surf guide](/occys-left-surf-sumba/) covers the setup in depth.

Away from the water, Sumba is known for its waterfalls, traditional villages and world-class ikat textiles. Cited sources do not name specific weaving villages, individual falls or per-tour prices, so this guide points you to the categories rather than inventing names or figures — our concierge confirms current, real options on the ground. The Pasola festival, a spear-throwing ritual on horseback, runs February–March; see the [Pasola festival page](/pasola-festival-sumba/) for timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sumba Island Escapes affiliated with NIHI Sumba?

No. Sumba Island Escapes is an independent editorial guide published by Juara Holding Group. We name NIHI Sumba only to inform travellers and hold no affiliation, endorsement or booking authority over the resort. Stays, transfers and activities featured here are arranged separately through our concierge partner at sumbaislandtour.com, operated by Bali Premium Trip.

How many days do you need to see Nihiwatu and Sumba?

Plan four to six days. NIHI’s historic rates carried a three-to-five-night minimum, and the Tambolaka drive alone runs 90–120 minutes each way. That window lets you fit Occy’s Left surf sessions, waterfalls and a village visit without rushing. Add a night in Bali on either side to absorb flight timing, especially around Nyepi on 19 March 2026.

When is the best time to visit Nihiwatu Sumba?

Sumba skews drier roughly April to November and wetter November to March, so the drier window aligns with NIHI’s High and Peak 2026 seasons. Green Season (12 January–31 March and 1–20 November 2026) is quieter and lower-priced. Surfers often target the dry months, and the Pasola festival runs February–March. All dates come from NIHI’s published rate sheet and are subject to change.

Do you have to stay at the resort to surf Occy’s Left?

Occy’s Left sits about 800 feet (245 metres) offshore from the NIHI boathouse, and access is managed by the resort, which caps the break at 15 surfers with a jet-ski service priced around rates ↗++ per day (roughly USD 150–175 as of 2026). In practice, guaranteed access is tied to staying on the property; our concierge can confirm current arrangements.
